about

This song is about the speakeasy days of New Orleans and a particular Madam who was bitter sweet. Big Band Sound

lyrics

Madam Poteet

©2019 By: Lloyd Mark Sutton

Way back in the speakeasy days
Music was jazz and big bands played
Dancers would sing and masquerade
It was American made

Bourbon Street was the raging seen
Men came searching for a Cajun dream
Madam Poteet filled the bill it seemed
Or was it all a scheme

Into the club walked Madam Poteet
All of the men fell at her feet
She was a real French Quarter treat
But she was bittersweet

She could take a man’s money and take his heart
Then she would tear him all apart
He was a goner from the start
So he better be smart

Then one day ole Pierre comes in
He’s just a grinning and drinking gin
He thought he was smarter than other men
But guess what happened then

Into the club walked Madam Poteet
All of the men fell at her feet
She was a real French Quarter treat
But she was bittersweet

Well old Pierre wanted her for his own
Called her up on the telephone
She answered with her sweetest tone
Meet me at my club alone

Into the club walked Madam Poteet
All of the men fell at her feet
She was a real French Quarter treat
But she was bittersweet

She took Pierre’s money and she took his heart
And then she tore him all apart
He was a goner from the start
He wasn’t very smart

So if you down on Bourbon Street
You best steer clear of Madam Poteet
She ain't the one you want to meet
Cause she is bittersweet

Into the club walked Madam Poteet
All of the men fell at her feet
She was a real French Quarter treat
But she was bittersweet
